It covers the international stretch of the River Tagus (Tejo) with its main tributaries, the Aravil, Erges and Pônsul rivers, over an area of more than 26,484 hectares. The park’s forest cover consists mainly of cork oak and holm oak woodlands. It is an important nesting area for Mediterranean birds, birds of prey and cliff-nesting birds, where one can observe Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti), Short-toed Snake Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus), Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo), Iberian Magpie (Cyanopica cooki), Spotless Starling (Sturnus unicolor), Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis), Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus) and European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster).
The park’s mammals include the European Otter, the Wildcat, the Common Genet, the Wild Boar and an important population of deer.

They are the result of the geodiversity of the border region, found in the quartzites of Termas de Monfortinho and in the granites of Salvaterra do Extremo and Segura. The Erges is still a wild river that has formed three impressive gorges within a short distance. Discovering these canyons means finding a hidden world made of granite lying over a border of wars and smuggling.
Type: mixed (on foot and by vehicle).
