Covering a total area of 85,150 hectares, this natural park is built around the natural course that the River Douro follows along the border between Portugal and Spain, as well as the last kilometres of the River Águeda. It is one of the largest rivers of the Iberian Peninsula and, when it enters Portugal, it already appears as a deep valley.
Formed by vertical cliffs, this river canyon stretches for 130 km within the Natural Park. With these characteristics, it stands as the “Grand Canyon” of the Iberian Peninsula and is home to the most important populations of cliff-nesting birds. These are mostly vultures (Griffon Vulture, Cinereous Vulture and Egyptian Vulture), Golden Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle and Black Stork. But emblematic species such as the Peregrine Falcon, the Red-billed Chough, the Alpine Swift and the Blue Rock Thrush also occur here.
Besides birds, the Wolf, the Wildcat and the Roe Deer also occur here.

This territory has a microclimate marked by scarce rainfall, low winter temperatures and high summer temperatures. Here we find mainly Mediterranean vegetation, made up chiefly of holm oaks (Quercus rotundifolia) and cork oaks (Quercus suber). Also notable are the groves of Prickly Juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), European Nettle Tree (Celtis australis), Pyrenean Oak (Quercus pyrenaica) and Portuguese Oak (Quercus faginea). It is a territory with very little human occupation, which for a long time has shaped this landscape through traditional farming practices that created a mosaic of habitats of great importance for biodiversity.
In general, this activity covers the most relevant aspects of the natural heritage of the Douro International: the impressive landscapes, the birds, the reptiles and amphibians, the insects and the flowers. Accompanied by an experienced nature guide/photographer, we can also, in a practical way, develop some photographic techniques and concepts.
